Essential Oils

Baby in LavenderWhen I lived in Bangkok, Thailand,  there was nothing like walking into one the many spas there from the dirty, polluted street and inhaling the fresh scent of lemongrass oil diffused in the air.

I thought it would be fun to recreate that in my house so I purchased a Premium Starter Kit from Young Living and fell in love with diffusing the oils in my house.  It was like a candle, but more relaxing.

I LOVE how they smell in our home and the fact that they are totally safe and non-toxic for my kids and pet.

Are you ready to give them a try? Click through the tabs to find out how we use them and how to get your hands on them yourself...

There are SO many ways my family uses Young Living oils!

Here are just a few examples:

Peppermint

In the morning I love the smell of peppermint and lemon in the diffuser. Sometimes I repeat when I get the afternoon sleepies!  Peppermint is also great for supporting digestive function.

Lemon

Lemon is such a cheerful oil! I love the smell of it mixed with Joy in the diffuser! It also tastes great in water.

FrankincenseFrankincense is an amazing, ancient oil and quite possibly my favorite. I put Frankincense into my face cream to support skin health.  I also diffuse Frankincense to calm my kids and soothe the body and mind.  I just love the smell of it and put it in my diffuser for a stimulating and elevating aroma.

PurificationI put Purification on a cotton ball and drop it into the bottom of the trash can, diaper pail, or shoe to remove strong odors.  I also diffuse Purification anytime I've cooked fish and it almost instantly removes the smell from the air!  Purification is is an blend of essential oils which includes: Cintronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Lavandin, and Myrtle.

LavenderLavender is my go-to oil.  I use it for EVERYTHING!  I diffuse it for a calming scent and it helps me unwind at the end of the day when I put a few drops in my bath.  I have never smelled lavender like Young Living lavender.  It blows any other lavender essential oil out of the water.  It's sweet and clean, like a mountain meadow.  I love it!

Stress AwayI rub Stress Away onto my wrists and temples to relax and calm me and reduce stress.  I often diffuse them while reading before bed.  I LOVE the smell of this oil -- it smells like a tropical vacation in a bottle.  I rub it into my wrists as a perfume and wear it on my diffuser necklace all the time!  Stress Away is a blend of essential oils which includes: Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea, and Lavender.

ThievesI rub diluted Thieves onto my and my kids feet every morning to support healthy immune function.  I also make my own kid safe cleaning solution with it. Thieves is an blend of essential oils which includes: Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary.

Panaway I rub Panaway on anytime I have sore muscles or tension.  It can help counter stressed nerves and ease tight, sore muscles. It's very effective!  Panaway is a proprietary blend of essential oils which includes: Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Clove, and Peppermint.

R.C.R.C.  R.C. combines three different kind of eucalyptus oils, peppermint, lavender, pine, myrtle and marjoram and I love diffusing it to create a comforting aroma.

Copaiba

Copaiba (pronounced co-pay-ee-ba) light cinnamon scent and it's such a great addition to any healthy lifestyle. If you put it in a capsule and take it internally it can aid digestion and you can add it to any roll-on that you use for muscle soreness or injury to support your body's healing response.

DiGizeDiGize is must-have oil in our family! It helps support our digestion, soothes our tummies, and is a great thing to always have on hand when traveling. DiGize combines Ginger, Anise, Fennel, Peppermint, Tarragon, Lemongrass, Patchouli, and Juniper essential oils.

AromaEaseAromaEase smells so fresh and invigorating. We love to use it when traveling to keep our tummies feeling settled when on the move. It's a combination of Peppermint, Spearmint, Ginger, Cardamom, and Fennel oils.

FAQs

Lavender Farm

  1. Does enrolling as a Distributor mean I have to sell oils?

No!  In Young Living-speak, “Distributor” just means that you have access to the wholesale prices (read: discount!).  IF you ever thought that you might want to sell the oils, you absolutely would be able to do that (contact me for more details), but you are never required to do so.  The vast majority of people who enroll with Young Living do so just to get the discount on their personal orders.

  1. What’s the benefit as enrolling as a wholesale member/distributor?

When you enroll as a wholesale member, you get the 24% discount (wholesale pricing) on all oils.  Plus you have the option at some point of enrolling in Young Living’s Essential Rewards program, which is such a great loyalty/savings program if you end up loving your oils and ordering them regularly.

  1. Am I going to have to buy something every month?

Nope!  There are NO monthly purchase requirements.  If you do want to keep your wholesale member status, you will need to make $50 worth of purchases at some point in the year after you buy your starter kit -- kind of like a membership warehouse like Costco, except you actually get product for your membership fee!  If you don’t end up making that $50 purchase within a year, you can restart your wholesale membership at any time just by making a $50 order.

If you do fall in love with the oils and find yourself purchasing them regularly, you may want to look into signing up for Young Living’s Essential Rewards program.  This is a customer loyalty program which lets you earn points on your purchases that can be applied as credit for later purchases AND gives you the opportunity to earn free oils every month.  BUT it’s NOT a requirement for being a wholesale member.

  1. What is the difference between Young Living and other essential oil companies.

I buy and use Young Living personally and with my kids because Young Living owns their own farms and is committed to quality, organic, and sustainable farming and distilling processes from the seed to seal.  For example, they use essential oils as natural pesticides and do all their own hand weeding. Also, Young Living regularly submits to in-house and third party testing to ensure their quality.

A big plus in my book is how long they've been around… Young Living was founded over two decades ago, meaning that it’s definitely one of the most established companies in the essential oil business.  It’s pioneered various different distilling methods to get the most efficacious composition of essential oils and has over time naturally developed better and better strains of their crops.

For me personally, I have tried other essential oils and haven’t found them to be nearly as effective as Young Living (not to mention, Young Living smells a ton better too!).

  1. Why are the oils so expensive?

Ok, good question!  I really wondered the same thing myself when I started looking into buying these oils.  The main reason is Young Living’s total commitment to quality.  Young Living owns their own farms and is committed to quality, organic, and sustainable farming and distilling processes from the seed to seal.  For example, they use essential oils as natural pesticides and do all their own hand weeding.

They also grow their crops in the environments they are supposed to grow in -- for example, they grow frankincense in Oman (in fact are the only essential oil company who is allowed to grow there) which is where frankincense originally comes from.

Also, they have spent decade perfecting their distilling techniques to ensure that each essential oil is distilled in exactly the right way to ensure the maximum efficacy for various purposes.  They also do amazing quality control, submitting to in-house and third party testing, and they throw away any oils that don't meet their rigorous testing!  Because of that, a teeny-tiny amount of YL oil goes a looong way!

When I first started with Young Living, I saved up for three months to buy my Premium Starter Kit and if you don't have room in the budget right now, I suggest saving up too.  I don't want anyone going into debt to buy these oils!

  1. What do I get when I purchase a premium starter kit?
  • ELEVEN 5 mL bottles of Young Living essential oil -- Thieves, Peppermint, Lavender, Lemon, DiGize, Purification, Stress Away, Copaiba, Panaway, R.C., and Frankincense (or AromaEase if ordering to an APO/DPO/FPO address).
  • A choice of one of Young Living’s beautiful diffusers, which is similar to a humidifier, except it is specifically designed to disperse essential oils in your home without compromising their amazing properties.  I LOVE my diffuser and use it EVERY DAY!
  • rollerball attachment (called Aroma Glide Fitment) which you can put on any bottle of oil you want to just conveniently roll it right on.
  • Lavender, Lemon, Peace & Calming, and Thieves samples.
  • Samples of Young Living’s super antioxidant drink, NingXia Red

BONUS!  When you enroll with me, I will send you a fun package of freebies!

  • A copy of an essential oils reference book, SO key in learning how to use the oils.
  • Two roller ball bottles so you can start making and using your own blends.
  • Bottle labels to go on top of the essential oil bottles to keep you all organized.

ALSO!  When you enroll with me, I will send you a fun package of freebies!

  • A copy of an essential oil pocket reference, SO key in learning how to use the oils.
  • Two roller ball bottles so you can start making and using your own blends.
  • Bottle labels to go on top of the essential oil bottles to keep you all organized.

  • Click here to begin the enrollment process
  • It’s up to you, but I would definitely recommend selecting “Member” -- this will give you access to purchase the amazing and great-value starter kits Young Living offers, and will also get you access to the 24% member discount on all YL products.
  • Put my member number 1921180 in the Sponsor ID and Enroller ID spots

STEP 2:

  • Fill in your membership information -- address, etc.  If you provide your email address, I will make sure you are added to our amazing, private Facebook group which provides tons of support and direction in how to use your oils.  I will also make sure you get my fantastic monthly newsletter with DIY recipes, monthly promos, and fun information about oils.
  • Fill in your sign-in information.
  • If you do not feel comfortable putting in your social security number (this is only for tax purposes if you decide to turn this into a business) then you can get an EIN from the IRS in just a few seconds here and use that number instead (the IRS just needs to be able to connect some number with you for tax purposes).   They need a Social Security Number or an EIN because if you make $600 or more per year selling Young Living products, you will receive a 1099 form in the mail (which is required by law). Young Living will never share this info with anyone.

STEP 3:

    • Choose the kit you want.  I definitely recommend starting with one of the Premium Starter Kits. If you want the 11 bottles of essential oils, choose the Premium Starter Kit (first choice on the list).
    • Some of the other Premium Starter Kits include some of YL's awesome line of Thieves products or NingXia Red products.  If you are interested in those products, you can choose one of those kits and still receive the 24% member discount on all future purchases, as long as your choice says "Premium Starter Kit" you are good to go!
    • I started with the oil Premium Starter Kit myself since I wanted to start with the oils but have since fallen in love with all the Thieves products and NingXia Red too (don't worry, you can try those out later if you'd like!)
    • If you are shipping APO/DPO/FPO, you can now order ANY Premium Starter Kit! Young Living offered an special military kit due to USPS shipping restrictions, but USPS has now lifted those restrictions and you are not limited to ordering the military kit. When choosing your shipping option, make sure to choose USPS Priority Mail.
    • You can choose whatever diffuser you want (they are priced accordingly).
    • The diffuser included in all kits has a 110-240V power cord so it should be good to use in most countries (except maybe Japan if you have 100V, you'll need a transformer in that case).  The plug is the standard straight two-prong used in the U.S. so if you have anything other than that, you'll need a plug adapter (not transformer though).
    • These kits are such amazing deals that YL only lets you buy one type of each kit once in your life…believe me, I’ve tried to buy more!  If I were to buy all the products in the Premium Starter Kit, even with my member discount, it would cost me over $300!

STEP 4 (OPTIONAL!):  You can skip the Essential Rewards part of the enrollment process for now.  This is essentially a customer loyalty program which gives you the option of earning free oils every month (benefit to trying it now is that you earn TWO free oils... bonus step below!).

  • It is a great option for people who love their oils and order regularly, but it’s not something you need to decide about right now. I will send you an email with more information after you enroll.

STEP 5:

  • Complete the check-out process.  Young Living accepts most major credit cards (I encourage you to use your debit card and not accrue any debt making this purchase!).

BONUS STEP–Completely Optional!  If you would like to earn a free bonus oil this month,  then get your order total up to 190 PV (PV stands for Point Values and different products have different Point Values).

  • So if you get the Premium Starter Kit, you’ll automatically have a 100 Point Value (PV)… then you’ll just need 90 more PV to get the bonus oil.
  • So, for example, you could grab a bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner at 22.75 PV, an extra bottle of Lavender (the first one I run out of) at 23.50 PV, a bottle of RC at 10.25, a bottle of Cedarwood at 11.25, and a Breathe Again roll-on at 25.75 (or whatever combination of products you'd like!) and get up to that 190 PV that will get you your free BONUS oil (the bonus oil changes from month to month).
  • If you want to get TWO free oils this month, you can go back to Step 3 and sign-up for the Essential Rewards program/kit.  This program does require you to purchase 50 PV worth of products every month, but you is a GREAT program that gives the opportunity to earn free oils and points towards free products every month.  Click the Essential Rewards tab for more information on this program.

This step is completely optional!

Essential Rewards

If you have fallen in love with your oils and are ready to order more, you may want to take a look at Young Living's Essential Rewards (ER) program before you do.

Essential Rewards is Young Living's customer loyalty program.  You get rewarded for ordering regularly.

Here are the details on how it works:

  • Every month you place an order worth 50 PV  (PV stands for Point Value and for the most part, one point equals one dollar) or $50.  At first I balked at spending that on oils each month, but once I realized how much a part of our life they'd become and how much money I was spending NOT on the ER program, I decided I might as well sign-up and earn some free products!
  • You earn a certain percentage of your monthly PV to spend on additional products (10% for the first consecutive 3 months, 20% for the following 21 consecutive months, and 25% at 24 months and beyond).  You can take those points and order free product anytime after the first two months!
  • You can change your order anytime throughout the month (I do it all the time!).  You can also change the date of your order within the month anytime.
  • You'll get gifts from Young Living at 3, 6, and 9 months and a special gift at 12 months - a Loyalty blend oil only available through ER.
  • Every month you have the opportunity to get free oils and products if your monthly ER order PV reaches a certain amount.  For example, on one recent month, you got a free 5 mL bottle of Marjoram and a free 5 ML bottle of Idaho Balsam Fir if you spent 190 PV on your ER order.
  • If you're interested in signing up, shoot me an email at kristin@globetrottingmom and I'll help you get set-up!

People often ask what oils I use the most.  Far and away, I use the oils in the Premium Starter Kit the most -- those are key!  But beyond that, I do have a few favorites that I like to keep in stock.

You may want to add them on to your starter kit order right away (and earn that free oil) or wait and save up for them.  In either case, here are some of the next oils I recommend giving a try:

JoyJoy is a really uplifting and refreshing scent.  I love diffusing it in the morning along with peppermint.  Joy is an blend of essential oils which includes: Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Lemon, Coriander, Tangerine, Jasmine, Roman Chamomile, Palmarosa, and Rose.

Tea Tree

Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca Altenifolia) is great for cleansing and refreshing skin. I add it and Frankincense to some witch hazel to make a natural toner.

Citrus FreshWhen I'm trying to focus on getting as much work done as I can while the kids are napping, I love to diffuse Citrus Fresh to help me concentrate.  I also love diffusing this when my house isn't super clean because it makes it smell like I just scrubbed it!  Citrus Fresh is an blend of essential oils which includes: Orange, Tangerine, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Spearmint.

Peace & CalmingPeace & Calming:
The name says it all.  Peace & Calming blends tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli, and blue tansy, which are all calming and uplifting oils.  This is one of my personal favorite oils (although true story -- I actually hated it when I first smelled it!) and I love to diffuse it when I am reading before bed or when the kids are going bonkers right before dinner. I also love putting it on my diffuser necklace! [note Peace & Calming is out of stock until fall 2016 due to a failed blue tansy crop, but you can now try Peace & Calming II!]

ValorValor:  Another one of my favorite blends and pretty popular with the men.  Valor  combines spruce, blue tansy, rosewood, and frankincense which are all great calming  and steadying oils.  I rub it on my temples before speaking in public, I put it on the kids before doctor’s appointments, and again often diffuse it at night before bed. [note Valor is out of stock until fall 2016 due to a failed blue tansy crop, but you can now try Valor II!]

CedarwoodCedarwood:
I personally love the smell of this oil (it’s reminds me of Stress Away because Cedarwood is in Stress Away!).  It’s a fantastic oil for calming and relaxing.  I love mixing some in the diffuser with Lavender and Peace and Calming and also put some on my or the kids feet at night to relax them before bed.

Dragon TimeDragon Time:
This is a blend of calming and soothing essential oils. It combines Clary Sage, Fennel, Lavender, Marjoram, Yarrow, and Jasmine oils.  Clary Sage, Fennel, and Yarrow -- these oils are rich in phytoestrogens and can support women's emotions during special times and needs. I use it in combination with a natural progesterone supplement and it works WONDERS!

Breathe Again

Breathe Again Roll-On:  This is such a convenient way to support respiratory health!  It combines four different kinds of eucalyptus with myrtle, blue cypress, rose, peppermint, and copaiba oils.  I throw it in my purse when I need it and apply throughout the day!

Deep Relief

Deep Relief Roll-On:  This has become such a staple in our house.  It combines peppermint, lemon, balsam fir, clove, wintergreen, copaiba, helichrysum, vetiver, and palo santo oils.  It is just great to use on sore muscles to help recover from exercise and so many other things.  Again, it's in a convenient roll on bottle, so you can just throw it in your purse!

RutavalaRutavala Roll-On:  This is a proprietary blend of Lavender, Valerian, and Ruta -- all oils that promote the relaxation of body and mind. I use it before bed every night!
